Incepted Verse Snippet - Adonis & Piper
Notes: Takes place prior to Piper moving in with Kol and before their Overlook adventures. Just a random sidebar featuring Piper and Adonis because they demanded it.
[ Open to Kol should he wish to reply but otherwise closed. ]
It had been nearly two months since Piper arrived in New Orleans and her life had significantly changed since then.
She'd met an Original fucking vampire and helped him take back the Abattoir all within the first two weeks of being in town. She also got a brand spanking new power, something that she had thought would never happen again.
And she was still here.
Again, something she hadn't thought would happen. She was still sure some days that she would pack up and leave again but as the days went by, she realized that she had missed this complicated, stubborn, and yet beautiful city.
She had missed the food, the drinks, and the people. She had missed the magic that seemed soaked into the very mud and water that lay beneath the pavement.
It really was no wonder why her family made this their home for generations.
This new relationship with Kol and their dynamic was also an unexpected but interesting development in her life. Years ago, she might've balked at the thought of helping him take over the city but now, she got it.
Some days, she didn't think she was all that different from her past life but so far, she hadn't tortured humans so perhaps there was still a line that she hadn't crossed yet.
Truth be told, months ago, she would have balked at the very idea that she was interested in someone new and yet... here she was.
Piper was settled into a cafe table in the corner at Cafe Beignet with a coffee, the nearly eaten order of beignets, and a book when her phone rang. Releasing a sigh, she wiped off her fingers before answering it through her headphones. Technology had come a remarkable way.
"You have the damnest timing, you know," she says, mentally calculating the time it was in London or specifically what time it would be in the Underworld if that's where he was calling her from. "Shouldn't you be doing this thing called working? Or, whatever it is you're doing now that we're not running for our lives?"
"We never ran, Piper. We fucking sauntered toward the danger," comes the voice on the other line before pausing. "Okay, well I did. You did run for a little while."
"Fuck off," she says with just the tiniest grin before taking a sip of her coffee. "You still didn't answer my question, shouldn't you be busy or something? Why are you bothering me so early?"
"Early? Where are you?"
"NOLA," she answers simply.
There's a pause on the other end and she can imagine his eyebrow arching in surprise. "Still?"
"Again, do you have a point? However lovely it is to hear from you..."
"I'm just surprised is all. It's been a while since you've stayed in one place for any length of time. Seattle was probably the longest after...," he trailed off before clearing his throat. "How is it?"
She takes a sip of her coffee and looks around her. No one was paying the least bit of attention to her and that was wonderful in and of itself. The height of the tourist season was over but still, there were plenty of tourists and locals who were getting ready for work or picking up something before they went off on whatever adventure was on that day's schedule.
"Yeah, I know... it's good. It's been really nice being back. It's weird not having Jordan's gran here to visit or Mercedes and the others but still it's nice. It's obviously changed in many ways but not at the same time."
Adonis chuckled on the other end. "You'll find that to be true as the years go on. As for the reason I called -"
"Finally..."
"There's a job that I thought you would be perfect for. Not too far from where you are, actually. Are you interested?"
She raises an eyebrow and thinks about it for a moment. There were only a few types of jobs that he would call her in for. "Send me the details and I'll consider it. Are your new friends okay with you hiring the enemy?"
"Piper, to some, I'm still considered the enemy. But now they know if they fuck around, they'll find out what we can do. Besides, I heard that someone got a brand new power and thought you might enjoy testing it out." He pauses. "It's also not the only thing I heard about your recent activities. I'm hurt that you didn't share the good news with your best friend."
"We talked about this Adonis - stalking is creepy, don't do it. And I really need to know who is keeping tabs on me," she says with a roll of her eyes. If this was years before, she'd have said something about her best friend being gone but truth was, the obnoxious vampire on the other end had wormed his stupid self into being one of her closest, dare she think it, best friends.
And he bought her whiskey once a year. Priorities. "And you asshole, you know how I enjoy testing my new skills out. One second..." she says as she places her book into her bag and tosses the remains of her breakfast before stepping out of the cafe so she could walk and talk. Once she was clear of the cafe, she clears her throat. "So you probably also heard about my new friend and a potential new enemy?"
"I have and I'm unsure whether to commend you or ask if you're insane..."
She could hear a glass being sat down and smiles at the thought of him already drinking. "Isn't it a little early to be drinking, Adonis? As for the answer to that, probably a bit of both."
"You know if you need backup on anything, you can call me, right? I will literally be there in half a second..."
Piper rolls her eyes as she makes her way down Decatur. "Yes, I know you vampire demon hybrid - you get the uber-special teleportation power that I can only dream of having, if I need help or backup, I'll call. How are things going on your new... career path?"
"Swimmingly," he says dryly. "There are some who are not thrilled with the leadership change but they don't have a choice unless they want a fight. They can either play along or..."
She hums and can't help but laugh. "Yeah, I get it, more than you may know... Send me the information for this job and I'll let you know if I'm interested." Considering what she and Kol were working on, their positions were fairly similar but on a different scale.
"I'm sure your new friend would be interested in it as well."
Piper shakes her head with an amused grin. "You should really come and visit sometime. We don't have to revisit the old stomping grounds per se but... come have a drink with me at the Vampire Cafe."
He groans at the mention of the cafe. "You would choose to go there. I'll try to make it out soon. Let me know if you want the job. It'll pay well."
"How can I not? I really think that's what you needed to call the restaurant back in the day," she says with a laugh, feeling lighter talking about the past than she had in a while.
"David would have rolled his eyes so hard. Personally, I'm not sure the swanky professionals of London would have appreciated it as much as those in New Orleans...," Adonis responded with a laugh. "We would have to have called it something more appropriate for the location..."
Piper smirks in amusement as she crosses the street, winding her way toward the Abattoir to get started on her new project. "He would have. Jordan would have laughed though and been on my side. Oh, like the Ripper Cafe? If there isn't one already, you know I could have worked with that. It would have been the classiest place in the area."
He laughed and she could imagine him facepalming as he did. "Exactly. Of that, I have no doubt. I sent the information over to you, let me know within the next 24-48 hours, okay?"
"You got it. I'll let you know. Glad you called - even if you ruined my quiet morning time, jerk."
"You're welcome. Have a good day, Pip."
"Have a good night, Adon. Don't get too trashed."
"No promises."
